Introduction

Christmas had always carried two faces for Aleson Portner. One was bright and beautiful—the face displayed in department-store windows, wrapped in colored lights and framed by wreaths of evergreen. The other was quiet and sorrowful, filled with empty rooms, unanswered questions, and memories that refused to remain in the past.

Part 1

At thirty-two, Aleson had built the kind of life her younger self could only have imagined. She was educated, financially secure, and respected in her profession. From the outside, she appeared to have everything. Yet success had not filled the spaces left by the two people who had shaped her life: the mother who had loved her through her own pain and the father who had disappeared without explanation.

As Christmas approached, Aleson felt those empty spaces more deeply. She had spent years convincing herself that she no longer needed answers about her father. She had even stopped wondering whether he was alive. But on this cold December evening, an unexpected encounter would awaken the questions she had worked so hard to silence. In the eyes of a stranger, Aleson would come face-to-face with the past—and discover that some connections cannot be erased by either time or distance.

The rhythm of the train should have soothed her, but Aleson could not stop thinking about the man in the alley. She could still see his face beneath the streetlamp—weathered by age and hardship, framed by untrimmed gray hair and a beard that nearly concealed his features.

But his eyes had not been concealed.

Those soft hazel eyes had held something familiar. Something sorrowful. Something that had reached beyond her fear and anger and touched a place within her that she had kept guarded for years.

Part II

When she arrived home, Aleson locked the door behind her, removed her coat, and stood silently in the middle of the living room. The Christmas lights from the building across the street flickered through the window, casting patches of red and green across the floor. She tried to convince herself that she was tired and imagining things, but the stranger’s face would not leave her mind.

She walked to her bedroom and pulled a small wooden box from the back of the closet. Inside were the few personal items she had taken from her mother’s apartment after her death. Beneath Alice’s Bible and several old letters were the two photographs of Jake Portner.

Aleson sat on the edge of the bed and picked up the photograph of her father holding her as a newborn. He was smiling down at her, his young face filled with pride and wonder. Then she studied his eyes.

Her breath caught.

The eyes looking back at her from the photograph were the same eyes she had seen beneath the streetlamp.

“No,” she whispered. “It can’t be.”

Her hands began to tremble. More than thirty years had passed. The young man in the photograph would now be in his early fifties, but the stranger looked much older. Life on the streets could have added years to his face, she reasoned. Still, she had no proof; only a feeling—and a pair of eyes that looked too much like her own.

Aleson barely slept. By morning, she had decided that she had to return to the alley. She told herself that she only wanted to know whether the man was safe, but deep within, she knew the truth: she needed to look into those eyes again.

After work, she stopped at a nearby restaurant and purchased a hot meal and a cup of coffee. Then she made her way toward the alley. Her heart pounded as she approached the place where she had seen him, but the alley was empty.

She waited.

Minutes passed, and the cold began to settle into her hands and feet. Disappointment surprised her. She had spent most of her life believing that she wanted nothing from her father, yet now she feared she had lost him a second time.

As she turned to leave, she heard a voice behind her.

“Ma’am?”

Aleson turned. The man stood several feet away, wearing the same worn coat. He appeared hesitant, as though he was unsure whether he should come any closer.

“I brought you something to eat,” she said, holding out the bag.

He accepted it slowly. “Thank you. You didn’t have to come back.”

“I know.”

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

“What is your name?” Aleson finally asked.

The man lowered his eyes. “Most people around here call me Jake.”

The sound of the name struck her like the cold wind rushing between the buildings.

“Jake what?”

His face changed. Fear—or perhaps recognition—passed over it.

“Portner,” he answered quietly. “Jake Portner.”

Aleson felt the world around her grow still. The traffic, the footsteps, and the distant sounds of the city seemed to fade.

“My name is Aleson,” she said, fighting to steady her voice. “Aleson Portner.”

The bag slipped from his hands and landed on the pavement. Jake stared at her, his eyes filling with tears.

“Aleson?” he whispered. “My little girl?”

She wanted to shout at him. She wanted to demand to know why he had left, why he had never called, and why he had allowed her mother to spend the rest of her life waiting for a man who never returned. She wanted to tell him about Alice’s loneliness, the nights she cried, and the bitterness that had followed them both through the years.

Instead, only one question escaped her lips.

“Why?”

Jake lowered his head.

“I was young, foolish, and afraid,” he said. “I got into trouble and thought leaving would protect you and your mother. By the time I tried to come back, I was too ashamed of what I had become. I kept telling myself I would return when I got my life together, but I never did. Then the years passed, and I didn’t know how to face either of you.”

“My mother is dead,” Aleson said.

Jake closed his eyes as tears slipped down his cheeks.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered. “I am so sorry.”

Aleson studied the broken man standing before her. This was not the reunion she had imagined as a child. There was no explanation powerful enough to restore the years that had been taken from them. Her mother would not return. Her childhood could not be rewritten, and the man before her could not become the father she had needed.

But he was here.

And for the first time, the silence between them had been broken.

“I don’t know if I can forgive you,” she said honestly.

Jake nodded. “I understand.”

“And I don’t know what happens after today.”

“I understand that too.”

Aleson looked down at the spilled meal and then back at her father. The same hazel eyes that had once looked lovingly upon her as a newborn now searched her face—not demanding forgiveness, but quietly hoping for the possibility of it.

“There’s a restaurant around the corner,” she said. “We can get something warm to eat.”

Jake looked at her in disbelief. “Together?”

“Just a meal,” she answered. “And perhaps some answers.”

He nodded and wiped his face with the back of his hand.

Part III

As they walked from the alley, Aleson kept a careful distance between them. She was not yet ready to call him Father, nor was she prepared to forget the pain his absence had caused. But something had shifted within her. For the first time in her life, she no longer had to invent his story. She could finally hear it from him.

At the corner, Jake glanced at her beneath the glow of the streetlight. Aleson looked back at him and saw regret, sorrow, and a faint glimmer of hope.

Then she saw something else—herself.

All her life, she had been told that she had her father’s eyes. Until that moment, she had thought of them only as a painful reminder of the man who had abandoned her. But as they stepped into the warmth of the restaurant, Aleson began to understand that eyes did more than reflect the past.

Sometimes, they allowed us to see the possibility of a different future.
