"It's not stealing if he doesn't belong here in the first place," Jenny argued. But Sasha had a point. What could they possibly do?

"Hey, check this out," Joey said suddenly. He was standing by a bulletin board covered with aquarium information. "There's a whole section here about the building's history. Listen to this: 'The Clearwater Aquarium was built in 1987 on the site of what local legends called the Sacred Pool—a natural tidal pool where, according to indigenous stories, humans and sea creatures once communicated freely. The pool was filled in during construction, but some of its original structure was incorporated into the building's foundation.'"

Jenny felt her heart skip. "Sacred Pool. Where humans and sea creatures communicated."

"That's just a legend," Cal said, but he didn't sound convinced.

"Is it?" Jenny pointed back toward Wally's tank. "Because I just communicated with a sea creature."

Carrie had gone pale. "Okay, this is getting weird. Like, really weird."

"There's more," Joey continued reading. "It says the aquarium has an emergency underwater exit system—a series of doors that can be opened to release water directly into the ocean in case of catastrophic tank failure. The ocean is only about two hundred yards from here."

"So theoretically," Sasha said slowly, "if someone opened those doors..."

"Wally could swim home," Jenny finished.

They looked at each other, the weight of what they were considering settling over them like a blanket.

"This is insane," Cal said. "We could get in so much trouble."

"We could get arrested," Carrie added.

"We could get expelled," Joey said.

Jenny waited. She wouldn't ask them to do this. Couldn't ask them. But she also couldn't abandon Wally. Not after feeling his loneliness, his desperate need for home.

Sasha was the first to speak. "I'm in."

"What?" Cal stared at her.

"I'm in," Sasha repeated. "Look, I don't know if I believe in telepathic octopuses or sacred pools or any of this. But I believe in Jenny. And if she says this creature needs help, then I'm helping."

"Me too," Carrie said quietly. "It's wrong to keep something locked up when it wants to be free. Even if it's just a regular octopus, it's still wrong."

Joey nodded. "I'm in. Obviously."

They all looked at Cal. He ran a hand through his hair, making it stick up in all directions. "You guys are going to get me grounded until I'm thirty." But he was grinning. "Fine. I'm in. But we need a plan. A good one."

As if in response, a gust of wind blew through the aquarium—impossible, since they were indoors—and scattered papers from a nearby information desk. One sheet landed at Jenny's feet. She picked it up.

It was a detailed diagram of the aquarium's emergency exit system.

"And if we get caught?" Carrie asked quietly.

"We don't," Sasha said firmly. "We can't. For Wally's sake."

They spent the next hour trying to act normal, touring exhibits and taking pictures like regular field trip students. But Jenny kept finding herself drawn back to Wally's tank. Each time, he was there, waiting, watching. And each time, she felt that connection spark between them.

"Then let's not waste their help." Jenny found Switch 3B and flipped it. A red light began blinking on the display. She pressed the button labeled ACTIVATE.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then, a low rumble vibrated through the floor. On one of the monitors, they could see Wally's tank. The water had begun to swirl, creating a vortex in the center.

"It's working," Jenny breathed.

"We need to go," Sasha urged. "Now."

They ran for the door, but Jenny paused at the threshold, looking back at the monitors. On the screen showing Wally's tank, she could see him moving toward the center of the vortex, his arms spread wide. Even through the grainy security footage, she could sense his joy.
