Out there, beyond the reach of the porch lights and the comfort of old walls, the reservation stretches forever—silent, ancient, unsettled. The land curls in on itself, swallowing secrets in the folds of red earth and brittle sagebrush, and the wind is always hungry. I was born in that wind, carved out of nightmares and loneliness. I first saw her two years ago, on a night when the moon was so thin it looked like a blade. She stood by the firelight, laughing at something David had said. Her laughter didn’t belong to this world. It was bright, like water in the desert, and it cut right through my darkness. For the first time in a century, I wanted something—not just to possess or destroy, but to love. I watched her for nights, always hidden, always silent. She glowed even as the land around her withered. She was hope, and I was the emptiness that hope fears.

But she belonged to David.

David was the kind of man the world breaks and leaves standing. He was gentle. He loved her with the quiet certainty of rain on parched ground, and she returned it with all her heart. I tore out his throat as the ghosts of the place wailed around us. Each kill was a step further from who I had been—a step deeper into darkness.

But the price of revenge is emptiness. With each death, the world grew colder, quieter. I became the thing they told stories about—a shadow, a curse, a warning. The other skinwalkers scattered, trembling at the thought of me. Even the animals fled from my scent. The only sound left was the memory of her laughter, echoing in my mind, relentless as the wind.

I tried to fill the emptiness with violence, with blood, but nothing worked. I returned to the place where I first saw her, standing alone beneath the indifferent stars. The land was silent, waiting.
