They arrive quietly, settle beneath language, and wait.

Long before we understand what intuition is, the body learns it. Long before the mind accepts it, something within us recognizes what is coming—not as prophecy, but as familiarity. These moments rarely announce themselves. They move like fog, softening the edges of ordinary life until, one day, we realize we have been walking through them all along.

I understood this only after my daughter told me her dream.

She spoke simply, without drama, unaware that certain words can carry weight beyond their years. She said it had been a cold afternoon, fog clinging low to the ground, the sky pale and indistinct, as though the sun itself had hesitated. The day felt heavy to her, though she could not explain why.

In her dream, she had been lying on her bed for a long time, staring at the ceiling, restless in a way that made stillness unbearable. There was no sadness, no fear—only the sense that remaining where she was felt wrong. Eventually, she stood up, pulled on a jacket, and stepped outside.

It was 2:30 in the afternoon.

She walked toward our favourite park near our house, a place so dear and familiar, it rarely demanded attention. In the dream, the park was alive with ordinary sounds: children laughing, swings creaking, parents speaking in low, distracted voices. Fog dulled the distance, muting color. Everything felt normal. Safe.

As she walked along the path, she noticed a car approaching the road beside the park. At first, it seemed unremarkable. Cars passed there every day. But something about this one held her gaze. It was not speeding—not obviously—but it felt too close, as though it had crossed an invisible line she could sense but not see.

She remembered thinking she should move.

She didn’t.

The fence shuddered.

The sound that followed was unmistakable—wood splitting, metal tearing—a violence that did not belong in a place built for play. The car burst through the boundary and surged into the park, cutting through space meant for laughter and safety.

She did not remember deciding to scream. The sound came from somewhere deeper than thought.

“EVERYONE—GET OUT OF THE WAY!”

The world erupted. Parents ran. Children screamed. Shoes slipped on damp ground. The car tore through swings and slides, benches collapsing beneath its force. When it finally stopped, the park fell into stunned silence.

People turned toward her.

They thanked her.

They told her she had saved them.

But as their gratitude reached her, a chill moved slowly down her spine—not sharp, not sudden, but deliberate. Something inside her recoiled. Without knowing why, without offering explanation, she turned and ran.

She ran toward home, breath burning in her chest, heart hammering.

Ten steps in, the world seemed to shift.

The air thickened. Sound stretched thin. Her limbs felt heavy, uncooperative. And then she heard it—the roar of something larger, closer, final.

A truck.

The impact behind her split the air apart.

When she turned, the park no longer existed as it had moments before. Where there had been people—people she had warned, people who had lived—there was devastation. Absence. Silence layered over destruction.

The guilt was immediate and crushing.

She had saved them once.

She had left.

And that had not been enough.

Tears streamed down her face, though she did not understand why guilt had chosen her. Fear closed around her chest, tight and suffocating.

Then she heard a sound.

A quiet, mechanical tick.

And she woke up.

She woke staring at the white ceiling of her room, her heart racing, tears already wet on her cheeks. For several seconds, she could not move. The room felt unfamiliar, unreliable. When she finally sat up, her hands were trembling.

It had been a dream.

She told herself that repeatedly. She often had vivid dreams. But this one clung to her, refusing to dissolve with daylight. It felt too complete, too heavy to dismiss.

Days passed. School resumed. Meals were eaten. Laughter returned. The unease faded gradually, worn down by routine.

Until one morning, the silence in the house grew so heavy that she felt compelled to turn on the television.

She could not explain why. She was not someone who followed the news. But that day, something urged her—quietly, insistently. And there it was.

Another park.

Another accident.

Another tragedy.

Real.

As she told me this, her voice remained steady, but her eyes were not. And as I listened, something old stirred inside me—something I had folded away years ago, now unfolding with unmistakable clarity. It was a specific tightening in my chest, a cold, familiar anchor dropping into my stomach—the same sensation I had felt in the silent, dimly lit halls of my old hostel. Watching my daughter sit with the weight of her dream, I realized she wasn’t just telling me a story; she was returning a memory I had long kept in the dark.

When I was in college, living away from home in a hostel that smelled faintly of detergent and old books, sleep once did the same to me.

The hostel was ordinary—narrow rooms, restless ceiling fans, whispered conversations trailing off mid-sentence. Nights were predictable, heavy with routine and half-read books—until one night, when sleep became deliberate.

In my dream, I saw a little girl I loved deeply.

She was not mine in blood, but close enough to feel permanent. Her family lived in our house then: a husband and wife, gentle people, raising three children. Two boys—loud, restless. And a daughter—the youngest—small, observant, quiet in a way that suggested she noticed more than she spoke.

She trusted me.

In the dream, she was crying.

Not loudly.

Not desperately.

Quietly.

The kind of crying that comes from a place beyond panic, where grief has already settled. She cried to me, her eyes swollen, fixed on mine, as though I were the only place sorrow could rest.

And then the knowing arrived.

Her father.

A car accident.

There was no spectacle—no noise, no violence—only certainty. The unbearable certainty that he was gone.

I woke abruptly, heart pounding, body cold. The hostel room was dark and unchanged, but I was not. My palms pressed together before thought intervened, prayers spilling from me in a whisper.

Please.

Let this be nothing.

Fear wrapped around me, but I said nothing. I believed words carried power, that speaking of bad dreams invited them closer. Eventually, the weight became unbearable, and I told my aunt. She listened, then smiled gently, offering the kind of reassurance people reach for when they want to protect you from dread.

“When you dream something bad about someone,” she said, “it means the opposite. They will live long.”

I held onto that belief.

Time passed. Life continued. The dream dulled.

Until the phone rang.

The same man.

The same ending.

A car accident.

Shock hollowed me out. I remember standing there, the receiver pressed to my ear, unable to cry, unable to speak. Strength was suddenly required of me. I was asked to come home, to help care for the children, to be steady for a woman whose world had just ended.

And I did.

I did not cry. I did not break. Grief waited because others needed me intact.

The little girl grew closer to me after that. I tutored her. She followed me quietly and sat beside me often. One afternoon, as I studied, she sat on a swing in the room, unusually still. When I turned around, tears were sliding silently down her face.

“I want my dad,” she whispered.

Time collapsed.

The stillness.

The quiet crying.

It was exactly what I had seen before.

Years have passed since then. I am 37 now. Life has layered itself over these memories, but it has never erased them. Watching my daughter stand at the edge of her own unexplainable knowing, I finally understand, just as my aunt had felt when I shared the dream with her.

Intuition is not prediction.

It is connection.

It moves quietly through generations—not to frighten us, but to remind us how deeply love binds us, so deeply that sometimes the heart senses loss before the world admits it.

Some dreams are not meant to be explained.

They are meant to be remembered.

With humility.

And with reverence for the places and the lives that once filled our world with warmth.
