Maya had walked past the old house a hundred times, but it was never just a house to her.

It stood at the end of Temple Road, behind a rusted iron gate that leaned slightly to one side, as if it had grown tired of standing guard. The walls were cracked, the windows broken, and vines had claimed nearly every inch of it. To most people, it was just another abandoned place—something to ignore.

But not to Maya.

From the time she was a child, she had felt something unusual about it. A quiet pull. A whisper without words.

“Don’t look at it too long,” her grandmother, Amma, would say whenever they passed by. “That place has its own mind.”

“Some say they left. Others say the garden took them.”

Maya laughed nervously. “That’s not possible.”

Uncle Sunil’s eyes met hers. “Some places are not meant to be understood.”

But Maya couldn’t let it go.

That evening, just before sunset, she made a decision.

She was going in.

They stood in front of the gate as the sky turned orange.

“This is your last chance to turn back,” Nethmi muttered.

Inside, the garden was wild and overgrown. Thick vines twisted around broken statues. The air felt heavier, cooler.

“Why does it feel like… someone’s watching us?” Nethmi whispered.

They walked deeper.

Nethmi grabbed Maya’s arm. “We’re leaving.”

“WAIT? Maya, that door is standing in the middle of nowhere!”

The air around the door shimmered.

“I think… it’s meant to be opened.”

“Of course you think that!” Nethmi snapped.

Maya reached out.

“Don’t!” Nethmi shouted.

The door opened.

A soft light spilled out.

“This garden was once cared for with love,” the voice continued. “But love turned into control. The family wished to keep its beauty forever… and so, the garden became something more.”

Maya’s mind raced. “What happened to them?”

“They became part of it.”

The flowers glowed brighter.

Maya stepped back.

“You must choose,” the voice said.

“Choose what?”

“To stay… and become part of this eternal beauty… or to leave, if your heart is free of greed.”

Maya thought of everything she had seen—the beauty, the mystery.

For a moment, she was tempted.

To stay in a place so perfect.

But then she thought of Nethmi. Of Amma.

Of home.

“I don’t belong here,” she said firmly.

Silence.

The garden seemed to hold its breath.

“I didn’t come to take anything,” Maya continued. “I just wanted to understand. But now I see… some things are not meant to be kept.”

The light softened.

The flowers slowly turned away.

A path appeared.

At the end of it stood the wooden door.

“Go,” the voice whispered.

Maya ran.

She reached the door and pushed it open.

Light flashed.

The house remained quiet.

One evening, Maya stood by the gate again.

Nethmi joined her. “You’re not thinking of going back, right?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Maya looked at the house one last time.

“I think… it’s finally at peace.”

As they turned to leave, a soft breeze passed through the garden.

For a brief moment, Maya thought she heard a whisper—

She stopped.

“What?” Nethmi asked.

Maya shook her head.

“Nothing.”

But deep inside, she knew.
