She had always been easy to rely on.

Not in the way that drew attention or praise, but in the quieter, steadier way that people came to expect without ever naming it. She showed up when needed, adjusted when plans changed, agreed before disagreement had the chance to take shape. It wasn’t something she thought about. It was simply how things had always been.

Weekend plans shaped around family schedules. Calls answered regardless of timing. Opinions softened, adjusted, sometimes left unspoken if they felt unnecessary to the moment. She didn’t resist it. Resisting had never been part of the equation.

The question came on an ordinary afternoon. They were sitting across from each other at a small café, the kind that held conversations without rushing them.
