Great Leaders Listen

Great Leaders Listen

This story is a moving tale about humility, leadership, and the power of listening. It follows Hon. Nkem, a newly elected representative who begins his term determined to fix the visible problems—like the market road—that would win public praise. But when a young community leader, Blessing, insists that the clinic needs a generator before the rains come, Nkem resists at first, proud of his plan. Eventually, he visits the clinic and witnesses firsthand the danger of mothers and newborns depending on flashlights during deliveries. Swallowing his pride, Nkem changes course and prioritizes the clinic. Though criticized for being “a leader who changes his mind,” his decision saves lives when storms cut the town’s power and the clinic’s generator keeps the lights on. Through this, he learns that true leadership is not about stubbornly holding to plans, but about receiving correction as a gift. At its heart, the story shows that great leaders listen. Correction is not weakness—it is the light that keeps people alive when everything else goes dark.
