This isn’t a gimmicky “gotcha.” The reveal that Celine is actually a wronged wife—and that this conversation with John is part of her own real revenge—recontextualizes every line that came before. When she says, “I have another meeting. Someone who is very invested in this outcome. I’d hate to keep your actual mother waiting,” the reader realizes: Celine never broke character. She just wasn’t playing the role John paid for, a nicely presented subject.
